How to Single Crochet for Beginners

The very first stitch any beginner crocheter will learn is a single crochet, and it is used in so many different projects.

This stitch gives you the foundation for every other stitch and is simple so it helps you learn without being too complicated.

How To Do a Single Crochet

We are starting this tutorial from already having created a slip knot and a chain, so you’ll first need to know those skills. The video above has those included if you are unsure of how to do that yet!

Starting with your chain, you’ll want to stick your crochet hook into one of the chain stitches. You’ll start with the second chain stitch from your hook, skipping the first chain.

You’ll then use your hook to grab onto the yarn that’s connected to the ball. You’ll have this yarn draping over your index finger to keep tension.

You want to pull this yarn through the chain loop fully so you have two loops on your hook.

Then, you’ll grab onto the working yarn again and pull that yarn through both of the loops on your hook to complete a single crochet stitch.

This works the same way when working into the top of a stitch. You’ll want to insert your hook under both parts of the stitch, you can see both parts of the stitch as a V shape at the top of the stitch and you want to insert under both parts of that V.

You’ll insert into the stitch, grab onto the yarn and pull through the stitch, then grab onto the yarn again and pull through both loops on your hook!
