How to Crochet a Magic Ring for Beginners

If you’re working any crochet project in the round, you may want to use a magic ring instead of a chain circle.

This is a great option which is actually easy to do, it’s seriously not complicated as much as people like to make it feel like it is!

How To Do a Magic Ring

To start your magic ring you are going to need yarn and a crochet hook. You’ll want to take your yarn and place the yarn end in the palm of your hand and drape it over the back on the knuckle side of your hand.

Take the working end of your yarn (the side connected to the ball of yarn) and wrap it around your index and middle fingers by going under the middle finger toward your body.

Take that same working yarn and cross it over the yarn end that is on the palm side of your hand and then pull it back behind your hand.

Turn your hand so you can see the two lines of yarn that are on the back side of your hand. You’ll now need to pick up your crochet hook and place it between your index and middle finger. You’ll want to go under the first piece of yarn that’s closest to your finger tips and then grab onto the other yarn strand.

You’ll pull that yarn under the piece of yarn that’s closest to your finger tips and then twist your hook around so the yarn is making a full circle loop around the hook.

Then, using your hook grab onto the working yarn and chain 1 stitch by pulling the working yarn through the loop you just made from the magic ring.

And there you go! You now have a magic ring. You can now put any stitches inside of this ring and start working, once you’ve completed your first row you can pull on the end of the yarn to close the ring and sl st to finish the first round.

Reinforcing Your Magic Ring

A big reason why some people don’t want to use a magic ring is that they believe that they will come undone, but you can fight against that. The best thing you can do is leave a decently long tail when creating your magic ring so that you can reinforce the magic ring when you weave in your ends.

To do this you’ll take your tapestry needle and weave the yarn around that magic ring all the way around, then you can cross over another stitch and go around in the other direction. This makes it so there are three strands of yarn holding your magic ring together and these will keep it from coming apart.
